Healthwatch is taking Haringey's blood pressure

Healthwatch Haringey staff and volunteers have been actively engaging with the local community to identify individuals who may have high blood pressure yet remain unaware of their condition.

Although high blood pressure often presents no obvious signs or symptoms, if left undiagnosed and untreated, it can lead to severe health complications such as heart attacks or strokes. By focusing on high-risk groups like older people and Black communities, Healthwatch Haringey aims to raise awareness, encourage individuals to seek medical attention, and provide them with the necessary information, advice, and support.

Our recent events

In the past two months, we have actively participated in various community meetings and events. These gatherings have served as valuable opportunities to reach out to individuals who may be at risk of high blood pressure.

We attended:

  • Wood Green Library in partnership with the resettlement team at Haringey Council on 22 May
  • Muswell Hill Methodist Church on 1 June
  • Winkfield Resource Centre, where Different Strokes North London and other community groups were present, on 7 June
  • Welbourne Children's Centre on 21 June

Since October 2022, we have been present at 13 separate events and conducted free blood pressure checks for a total of 255 people.

We found:

  • Severely high blood pressure: Out of the 255 individuals checked, 5 people (2%) were found to have severely high blood pressure
  • High blood pressure: 63 people (25%) were identified with high blood pressure
  • Slightly high blood pressure: Another 97 people (38%) displayed slightly high blood pressure readings.

We can come to you!
