Extra polio vaccine dose for children (London only)

Children aged 1 to 9 years old in London are being offered a dose of polio vaccine. There are signs the virus is spreading in London and the number of children vaccinated in London is lower than it should be. Boosting immunity in children should help protect them and reduce the risk of the virus continuing to spread.

The clinics below in Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington are offering free vaccinations to protect children against polio. You can attend a clinic in any borough.

Childhood vaccinations

Vaccines are the most effective way to prevent infectious diseases. Since vaccines were introduced in the UK, diseases like smallpox and tetanus that used to kill or disable millions of people are either gone or seen very rarely.

Other diseases like measles and diptheria have been reduced by up to 99.9% since their vaccines were introduced.

However, if people stop having vaccines, it’s possible for infectious diseases to quickly spread again.

These webpages on the North Central London Integrated Care System website include information on childhood vaccines and when they should be given.
